The water waster goes viral.

The ice bucket challenge

Joey De Leon has something to say
The ice bucket challenge was initially intended to raise awareness of the disease ALS and encourage donations towards research.

I must say it was one of those thoughtful ideas which weren’t quite thought,  it resulted in a waste of water as well. It didn’t really generate many donations as many people opted to (when nominated) do the ice bucket challenge instead of donating so it unfortunately became a social activity which people took part in for the views and likes. Thus forgetting the core reason which was raising funds for research.

How the ice bucket challenge affects some people
There are celebrities and those who did both (participate and donate) but majority of participants took part as it was popular on social media (regardless of whether they had been nominated or not) others hadn’t the slightest idea why there was even an ice bucket challenge.
The campaign was a great idea but sadly like most ideas (i.e. #bring back our girls) with a good cause got sabotaged by social network. Overall it was a success thankfully to those who took part with the intention of helping out.

However I think that the ice water bucket challenge is a fun challenge to partake in but, it is only normal for people to have fun in an environmentally friendly way. Humour is needed amongst human beings but sometimes you will find  out that other people will not react as expected towards the challenge hence these people pour water on anyone which is totally wrong. Yes it is fun making other people look stupid but it is not fun when violence then takes place cause such things cause conflict among people. Besides conflict and all water being wasted! I mean… come to think that some people out there do not have water then you find that one fool who decides to go around throwing water on people’s heads. I think it would be advisable if everyone appreciated water and used it for all the good reasons.

10 easy steps of doing the ice bucket challenge
  • Decide to take part in the ice bucket challenge
  • Accept the challenge
  • Gather what you will need
  • State your facts, e.g. your name, who challenged you, and you accepting the challenge, nominate 3 people, state that you are donating money to the ALSA.org
  • Lift and tip the ice water over your head
  • Upload the video/picture onto social media
  • Use #tags such as alsicebucketchallenge
  • Tag as much people as you desire
  • Include a donation link
  • Donate!

  1. i do think that this a good idea, and i don't think it was a waste of water. i do however think that South Africa doesn't use social media as they do in the States, that's why they made so much money there, because they know how to use social media. meanwhile here in SA, we don't utilize it to our advantage.

  2. I still think he Ice bucket challenge was a very good campaign to begin with cause it still funded sick patients. But I also believe we could rather also have funded poor people whom does not have water ,to help them get the basic needs.

  3. The ice bucket challenge was never a waste of water at all, it is one of the greatest campaigns that trended in history. Such a great eye opener.

  5. True Dori I agree with you with the fact that we did not use social media correctly and to our advantage as appose to the people over seas but I still say that we wasted a lot of water because there are places in SA with no clean water which shows how ignorant we can be with the most important source of our life

  6. That's so True Antie it did help a lot of people but I still think instead of throwing water on our heads we could have given it to people in need of water.

  7. Thank you, for your comment Buhle but although it was a great campaign on social media in means of trending but it did not generate a lot of money as anticipated because people participated in it for fun and not to help the sick showing that it was not successful in SA

  8. Samke I could not agree with you more, people did not participate in it for the right reasons and yes we can say it was a publicity stunt to draw attention to themselves and not the sickly.

  13. I like the photo you embed. I agree, people should not nominate or take part in the challenge if they fully know that they will not donate.
